| 71 THOMPSON STREET- BUILDING REHABILITATION
Project
description: Rehabilitation of existing historic warehouse
into office space for the North Carolina Department of Facility
Services.
Historic rehabilitation of an existing building into offices
for the North Carolina Department of Facility Services. The building
at 71 Thompson Street was spared from demolition when two adjacent substandard
buildings were taken down in 1999. The building is structured with steel
columns and charismatic bowstring trusses, with masonry infill. The design
concept for the renovation was to create a modern, open office, while expressing
the personality of the existing building. An emphasis on environmental
responsibility, both in materials and interior workspace, inspired many of the
design decisions, and is evidenced in the final product. New
interior walls were constructed using a series of panels with exposed
fasteners. The panels were created of unfinished Medium Density Fiberboard
(MDF) and homosote. Natural daylight from existing openings is
supplemented with semi-direct T-5 fluorescent fixtures.

71 Thompson St., Asheville, N.C.
