EMMA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: ADDITIONS AND RENOVATIONS Scope of project: 61,000 SF total. New classrooms, offices, cafeteria, and assembly hall. Renovation of existing classrooms, library, and gymnasium. Project completed and opened to students in August, 1996, on schedule. Features of project: First Buncombe County school to utilize a pre-cast, hollow core concrete floor system. Reduced foundation costs, exterior wall costs, saving $35,000, and shortened construction time by three weeks. Open, simple, flexible classrooms that meet or exceed state requirements, featuring ample natural light. Two separate buildings connected by exterior breezeways were converted into a single building with enclosed interior corridors. Successfully converted four obsolete open-plan classrooms to a new media center. Split-faced concrete masonry units incorporating school colors within color scheme. Insulating stucco system and aluminum-framed insulated windows will reduce long term heating and cooling costs. Long term growth and flexibility accommodated. First Buncombe County school to use site-built light gauge metal roof trusses in response to client's request for sloped roofs over new and existing flat-roofed buildings. This reduced construction time, preventing interruption of classes, and reduced long-term roofing costs. Visual cohesiveness was created between old and new construction. Architectural grade roofing shingles permit maintenance by school staff. School location: 37 Brickyard Rd. Asheville, NC 28806, (828) 232-4272. Start date: April, 1996. Completion date: August, 1997.
